Name: Russell John
Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
What made you start Freelancing?
Freelancing allows me to express my talents and creativity in a work environment that provides comfort and gives me a great sense of independence. I would not feel comfortable with the daily rigors of an everyday job nor would I appreciate the mundane life of a workaholic. Hence, I became a freelancer.
What is the best part about being a freelancer?
The level of unbridled freedom can be truly intoxicating. I enjoy the fact that I can choose to work when I want to and with whom I want to. For me, it is crucial that the work provides enjoyment and motivation and is without hassle. This becomes easy to do in the case of a freelancer as I choose to work with the employer with whom I feel a certain camaraderie. Being a freelancer also gives me the scope to pursue my ever-growing hobbies and giving time to my near and dear ones. The sense of freedom that I enjoy in my life is only made possible as I am a freelancer.
What are your tips for managing your time and workload?
Time management and strong organizational skills are necessary to ensure that work does not become unnecessarily cumbersome and complicated. One must note that while it is possible to work on multiple projects simultaneously, it is probably not ideal. If the freelancer takes up too much responsibility and becomes tardy with work deadline, or if the quality of his work suffers, then he also runs the risk of being perceived as unprofessional and unreliable. This is bound to create a negative impact on future projects, and relationship with existing and future clients will suffer. A strong quality of work delivered within deadline always makes for a satisfied client! Managing time and workload will also be easier if the freelancers diversify the kind of work that they do to maintain a strong level of motivation.
What has been your favorite project to work on and why?
It is quite difficult to select a particular project from all the work that I have done over the years. I strongly believe that the work that I do, irrespective of the difficulty or complexity level, has its own reward. After all, at the end of the day it is all about a good body of work that keeps your clients satisfied.
Working on a global platform can be challenging, what is the most important tip for employers and Freelancers to remember?
Language barriers and time differences in countries where employers and freelancers reside act as major obstacles to a professional working relationship. It is imperative that both the employer and the freelancer have a strong command over a common language, preferably English. Otherwise, there is a significant risk that instructions given will not be understood, and ultimately the work done will not match the actual ability of the freelancer, and the employer will be left disappointed. Also, different timezones create a scope for misunderstanding in regard to the deadlines for the work to be completed, so both parties need to be aware of their time differences when starting a project in order to coordinate and complete it successfully.
Finish this sentence; “My personal philosophy is…”
